Importance of 12 in The Mother’s symbol and its relevance to Sri Aurobindo Ashram-Delhi branch
Spending a few days in the spiritually charged environment of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Delhi, is a preference in my travel plan whenever I go to Delhi. Nestled in large open green area gives it a serene environment for soul searching. Being member of Sri Aurobindo Society for past many years and seeker on the path of Integral Yoga, the Ashram has made a very positive impact in my self-development and growth.
During a recent visit to Delhi in February, I happened to be there on the 70th anniversary of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram-Delhi branch.
During a morning walk in the campus, I noticed a labyrinthine path created in one part of the green belt; it had an inspiring quote on the relevance of labyrinth in our life journey. Walking on this path led to an inner realization of the zig-zag serpentine nature of the path one encounters as we tread on our life journey. It was an innovative way conceived by the Ashram team to help us connect and reflect upon the close interconnection of Physical, Vital and Mental aspects of our human life.
I listened to an inspiring talk by Tara Didi on Why 12th February was chosen for the Inauguration of Delhi ashram when it could have been the birthday of The Mother which is celebrated on 21st February. She said the reason given by The Mother was: “12 was an auspicious number to start any spiritual initiative”. On introspection on 12 as a number, I found it resonating with the 12 attributes (Sincerity, Humility, Gratitude, Perseverance, Aspiration, Receptivity, Progress, Courage, Goodness, Generosity, Equality, and Peace) of the Mother’s symbol, of which 8 attributes relate to attitudes and 4 relate to execution and progress.
The Mother’s symbol has held a deep spiritual significance for me as a seeker to align one’s thoughts towards triple transformation at mental, vital and physical levels by Aspiration, Rejection and Surrender. Invocation of four powers of the Mother’s Shakti in the form of Maheshwari, Maha Kali, Mahalaxmi and Maha Saraswati with Aditi as central force representing the Psychic center. Reflection, Resonating and learning to live the spiritual message of Mother’s symbol has been key enabler for me and I am sure for all of us in our spiritual journey.
Centres and ashrams developed by ardent devotees across India and outside India across the globe are serving as sources of spiritual rejuvenation and learning centers. It is a great feeling to spend time for relaxing and rejuvenating and offering our services to these institutions.
