Decoding the Subliminal Self … and its Cleansing in the Process of Purification

During the course of attending an online webinar organized by NAMAH this year, I came across the term “Subliminal self” which is a storehouse of perceptions, thoughts and feelings (PFT), just below the surface consciousness and before central psychic consciousness self; gets activated in dream state of consciousness and is also a trigger for our habitual reactions to external stimuli. A good metaphor of mango pulp for subliminal consciousness made me introspect and reflect to develop my understanding. Then reading the book entitled “Our Many selves” by Dr AS Dalal of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry, proved to be a good influencer to address my curiosity on this concept of Subliminal consciousness (Self).

Having gained basic information on the subliminal self, I took a conscious approach to interpret dreams that used to come and connecting the dots and then consciously working on dilution of impressions and memories by using Meditation and Japa as antidotes. This was an attempt to minimize the role of Desire soul (conditioned consciousness) and make the mind space free for True soul (consciousness) and increase the time of Deep Sleep state free of dreams. This has been practiced for past many years and there has been some success.

Subliminal self is the driver of most of the reactions to external stimuli and often the cause of behavioral patterns due to ingrained impressions in the form of memories. This is also interpreted as subtle or sub-surface consciousness driving the vital and mental being to autonomous reactions.

Living in the Present Moment which has been the quest for spiritual seekers requires minimizing the influence of Perceptions, Feelings and Thinking self, which are constituents of Subliminal self, as per almost all the spiritual leaders. This could be because impressions and influences of subliminal self act as dark forces in the journey of self-reflection and concentration on the central force, the Psychic self, which is the inmost self of our consciousness.

This is an essential pre-requisite for purification process and facilitates a continued connect with Psychic self, using Progressive Mind of quietude and Self-reflection which gradually facilitates Blissful experience of solitude and stillness.

It would be good for all seekers to make a conscious effort to decode our subliminal selves and experience Blissful experience of continued presence of Divine Grace in the stillness of Mind.
