Immortality of Ma

Ma, a term first uttered by every child on the earth. The child is physically attached to the biological mother from the time of conceiving till delivery through the placenta. In fact, the mental development of the child also happens in the womb of the mother!! This mother bears all the physical pain and sufferings to show the child, the light of the world. She nurtures and cares for the child and becomes part of the sadness and happiness through the child’s development stages. This relationship of the mother and child is as beautifully knit as the dawn and the dusk. Finally, a time comes when this mother leaves her physical body and moves on to a new life. Is this physical dissociation a real end to this intricate association? In the ordinary perspective, physical absence means mortality. Scientifically, however, the genes of the mother are carried in the child, so the biological mother, in a real sense, lives on and attains immortality.

There is another aspect of Ma, not a biological one, but one who takes care of hundreds of destitutes, orphans, geriatrics through her selfless love and affection. These helpless people get an opportunity to call her Ma. Over time, due to increasing inability and irresponsiveness of the body, she too is engulfed by the phenomenon of death. But certainly, she remains immortal through her magnificent work towards the society and her name is etched in the history of mankind.

The third and unique dimension of Ma is that of the Divine Mother. “There is one Divine Force which acts in the universe and in the individual and is also beyond the individual and the universe. The Mother stands for all these, but she is working here in the body to bring down something not yet expressed in the material world so as to transform life here – it is so that you should regard her as the Divine Shakti working here for that purpose. She is that in the body, but in her whole consciousness she is also identified with all the other aspects of the Divine.”1

This incidence of my life truly illustrates the power of The Mother. A few years ago, I was returning home with my parents from the railway station in a city around late evening in an autorickshaw. Near a busy shopping mall, a man in an inebriated condition, with a knife in his hand, barged into the driver’s seat, taking advantage of the slow speed of the auto nearing a traffic signal. He started using foul language and wanted to take control of the auto to take it to his designated location. As a normal human behaviour one would have started to panic, in fear, shouting for help!! But being even just beginners of integral yoga and believing in complete surrender to the Divine, we were in complete silence, only holding the blessing packet of The Mother and uttering Her name for the Divine intervention. The fiasco continued for about four-five minutes and then suddenly that man turned behind, looked at my mother and his face turned pale and he slowly said, “Sorry madam,” and requesting the driver to stop, he left quietly.

This incidence practically reaffirms the saying, “The Mother’s presence is always there; but if you decide to act on your own – your own idea, your own notion of things, your own will and demand upon things, then it is quite likely that her presence will be veiled; it is not she who withdraws from you, but you who draw back from her.”

Though The Mother too has left Her physical body, Her consciousness is amidst us. It therefore lies in the psychic consciousness of humans to understand the immortality of Ma!!! Irrespective of religion, region, caste, as long as human race exists, there is always Ma – who is and will always remain immortal!!
